Striker talk hotting up as Smith looks set to join Magpies...

Reports in the media continue to suggest that United could be about to make one more summer signing with various strikers including the usual suspects in the frame. Alan Smith looks almost certain to be leaving the Reds and he could be heading to Newcastle United - so there must be a chance that United might actually do a player plus cash deal for Michael Owen with Smith going in the opposite direction. The Red Devils might have some competition for Owen's signature, with Liverpool and Man City AKA the 'sleeping giant' who are both supposedly in the frame to sign the England striker.

A new striker link surfaced this week in the form of Sampdoria striker Fabio Quagliarella, 23. The players agent is doing a good job of linking his client to just about every top club in Europe. However, there's been no official interest from the Reds and I for one do not expect to see the Italian arriving at OT any time soon.

Other names that continue to be linked are Eidur Gudjohnsen, Darren Bent, Carlos Tevez, Jan Klaas Huntelaar and Jermain Defoe.
