Fergie and Gill at loggerheads over Sneijder deal?

Well what a strange turn events we've seen over the last 48 hours, with Fergie and then David Gill sending out conflicting messages about transfers. First we had Fergie speaking to the press telling us that United were unlikely to make any more signings before the Charity Shield. The manager suggested that the type of player he's looking for is not available at present and then when asked about Wesley Sneijder (exactly the sort of player United need and everyone including the manager knows it), Fergie claimed that he'd never really been interested - this we know, is a complete fabrication as David Gill spent some time in Milan earlier this month trying to broker a deal that would have seen the Dutchman moving to Old Trafford. We also know that this isn't the first time Fergie has contradicted himself over Sneijder in recent weeks.

Then just 24 hours later David Gill came out and took the unusual step of publicly talking about transfers when hinting that United might well sign one more player before the window closes. Why did Gill take this action? That question is open to debate. We can only read between the lines, and we cannot rule out that Ferguson and his CEO are at loggerheads over what could yet prove to be the biggest and certainly the most important transfer concerning Manchester United in the last decade. United need to sign a player who is capable of filling the creative midfield void which is so obvious, it is a gaping chasm.

The fact that both Fergie and Gill came out in such a short space of time and sent out completely different messages leads us to believe that all is not well behind the scenes concerning this very important next transfer. An alternative scenario is that the pair of them are playing some kind of cruel but elaborate game with the fans emotions...whatever the reason, please just get on with it and quickly.

United simply must improve in central midfield, failure to do so could prove to be costly with Manchester City adding new players at will and with a resurgent Liverpool. Not forgetting Chelsea who of course have a new young manager and Wenger's Arsenal, both will keen to prove on last season's performances.

  1. Sounds like a perfect way to conduct your business to me. The manager gives nothing away, while the MD keeps enough interest there for the players to know that United are still interested, but there are several options which stops the fee and wages being maximised. It makes a lot more sense to do it that way than the City way of telling everyone in the press exactly who you're targeting and for how much, giving that info to every other club who may be interested (as happened with Sanchez and Barca). Ferguson and Gill know exactly what they're doing, particularly as the Gill interview was pre-recorded on MUTV.

  2. Fergie says we "probably" won't sign any more players and Gill says that we "might". How is that a disagreement?

Sneijder's wage demands are excessive and would lead to other players demanding wage increases. It's hard for us to sign really big-name players because of the UK's 50% tax rate - players want extra large salaries to compensate.

  3. Fergie has been contradicting himself over Sneijder and so this latest episode is true to form.

We know about wage demands, UK tax laws haven't happened overnight, the rate has always been high and so it has always been an issue for top sportsmen who ply their trade within the UK - it isn't anything new. Or was it the fact that Fergie meant to say "we cannot afford Sneijder?".

Regarding the MUTV interview, this is down to news management and so you still have to wonder what is going on at the club - they 'being the ones in control of media output' aren't doing a very good job because they are sending out very mixed messages. When did the MUTV interview take place with Gill?

  4. OK, I have had it 100% confirmed by someone who was actually there when Gill recorded his MUTV interview that it was AFTER Fergie had gone public with his hint about no more signings. If, Gill's statement had been recorded a week ago then some of the comments above could be valid, but that is not the case so my post could well have some validity, there could well be internal friction between SAF and Gill.

  5. the truth is that Fergie says we probably won't bring anyone in before the game against City...Gill says we may bring in one more player before the end of the transfer window. There is no contradiction. They certainly aren't at loggerheads.

  6. The contradiction is Fergie: A week ago he said and I quote when asked about Sneijder "I've not done anything on that since I came over here", (here being the US). And then this week he said he's never been really been that interested or similar.

  7. You and I don't know if Fergie and Gill are at Loggerheads. What we DO is know is the pair of them sent out very mixed messages within the space of 24 hours and you have to ask yourself why that is.

  8. Jaysus... Fergie must be wetting himself... not that he reads any of this tripe, but the lengths people go to convince themselves that they are right about the most absurd things. You really think anyone at Old Trafford really give a flying f**k whether you think thay did this or that, or whether you think they lied? Meds.

  10. If you are a Man United fan, you will know by now how the things going on in the backroom. Fergie will only bring those players who are keen to play for ManU. If they are not keen for whatever reasons, Fergie will then deny to the press that he is ever interested in that particular player. Classic way of doing business.

  11. "If you are a United fan". Do me a favour pal, I've been following the reds for over forty years. I was here before Fergie and I'll be here long after he's gone.
