Michael Owen swap deal on?

Reports claim that Manchester United could be about to sign Michael Owen from Newcastle United. According to the media, Alan Smith will be moving in the opposite direction plus £4m. The Red Devils do need to sign a new striker and Owen has been linked for some time now.

Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce has confirmed that the former Liverpool striker has a release clause in his contract saying that Magpies are powerless stop the player from activating this exit clause.

Alan Smith has been the subject of much speculation about his future after it became clear that the Red Devils were not keen on extending his current contract. It remains to be seen if this latest story has any substance, but it would seem like a reasonable deal for all parties concerned, apart from the fact that Owen has an appalling injury record and United will therefore want to ensure that the player is 100% fit before agreeing to any deal. The medical report on Owen will be crucial.

I'd also add that I'm not convinced Owen is the right sort of player for United right now, yes Owen scores goals, but personally I'd much prefer Eidur Gudjohnsen who is also being strongly linked to the Reds. For me Owen doesn't bring players into the game enough and he doesn't hold up the ball in the same way that the Barcelona striker can.

  1. Tevez could win United the Champions League. Gudjonsen is only good for a premiership. United should go all out to sign Tevez before Arsenal gets him. Liverpool can't afford him.
